Traditionally, wired networks using copper or fiber optics have been the preferred choice for providing fixed broadband services due to their high capacity and flexibility.

Copper cables can be extended to a few meters depending on network speed requirements. This is usually more than enough for the interconnection within the data center.

Whether connected between servers in a single rack or between switches in a cluster, copper cables provide the highest available bandwidth for reliable and affordable transmission.

 

Regarding network costs, the cost of using copper cables is much lower than that of fiber optic cables. The cost of passive copper cables is 2-5 times lower than that of optical cables of the same length. In a cluster of 1000 nodes, hundreds of copper cables may be needed, which means hundreds of thousands of dollars can be saved. If you switch to a larger data center, you can save millions of dollars.

In addition, because copper cables do not consume electricity, their thermal design has a lower cooling requirement and can significantly reduce data center operating costs. Using copper cables can save hundreds of kilowatts of power compared to using fiber optic cables.

One of the biggest advantages of copper for reliability and speed is reliability. Network reliability is usually measured in terms of mean time between failures (MTBF). Passive copper cables have an MTBF of approximately 500 million hours, which is typically an order of magnitude higher than the industry standard for fiber optic cables.
